Shanghai

From August 1-9, 2008, I visited Shanghai, China (as part of an almost month-long journey to Shanghai, Beijing, and Geneva). My Shanghai experience was the result of an invitation to present a paper on Audio Description at the 18th World Congress of the International Federation of Translators. The photos in this gallery are focused on my experience at the Congress and views of Shanghai: the Jinmao Tower, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, the Yu Gardens, the Bund, a silk factory, the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum, a cruise on the Huangpu River, a walk through old Shanghai, the Shanghai Art Museum, the Shanghai Museum, the textiles district, the opening night of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and finally, a trip on Shanghai's "MagLev" on my way to the airport and my flight to Beijing.

  • Opening session, 18th World Congress, International Federation of Translators--the keynote speaker, former Chinese ambassador to France, Wu Jianmin, saw fit to go on at length about "arrogance" (read: the West) by insisting that any nation (read: China) develop in a particular manner (read: human rights). He cited France and the United States as having only recently giving the vote to women and blacks (!) and that the situation in Sudan is multi-faceted--that both sides have committed atrocities. Whew!

They also represent the five rings of the Olympics, the five elements of the world: the sea, forest, fire, earth, and sky, and the Olympic flame plus the characteristics of the four most popular Chinese animals: the fish, the panda, the Tibetan antelope, and the swallow.

  • Back to the Conference: "Translating Ibsen"--I did a Masters thesis on the women in Ibsen's plays in 1977 right around the time I first met Jane Alexander who had co-translated Ibsen's "The Master Builder" and was performing the role of "Hilda Wangel" in it at the Kennedy Center. A fascinating session! An interesting note: the scholar who was to have co-moderated the session, an outspoken authority on Chinese literature, was denied a visa and was unable to attend the Congress!
